Reiki is a type of therapy that makes use of the healer’s palm to get that much-needed healing. The name of the said therapy is a combination of Chinese and Japanese history. Rei means “supernatural powers” and Ki means “vital energy.” The basic idea of Reiki is that the vital energy is transferred to the other person who promotes healing. It triggers the body’s initial ability to heal itself. (This is not a type of therapy online way of healing.)

Some Reiki experts and their patients find this method useful, but still, science doesn’t support this claim. According to science, there is no proof that vital energy is existing and that the said therapy is the direct cause of how the person recovers from their health ailments. But despite the counterclaims of a research body, the practice of Reiki is not labeled as dangerous to human health. A professor from the University of Arizona once stated that Reiki is pretty harmless and it is not capable of damaging a person.

Just recently, Reiki was used as an integrated method in some health care institutions. In some studies conducted by hospitals, the said therapy was found to be effective in reducing the patient’s pain and anxiety. It also helps in making the person relaxed, lessen fatigue and eliminate depression. This claim was observed by the researchers of the University of Minnesota.

Spiritual Origins

Reiki was believed to exist as early as the 19th century, and it was first introduced by Mikao Usui, a Japanese monk. The said method is based on some old and traditional healing techniques drawn from Asian healing practices. Reiki adopts the idea that diseases are triggered through a vital energy imbalance. And with the help of Reiki, these imbalances are corrected.

This therapy method comes from ancient concepts which utilize inexhaustible energy and harnesses healing. Usui then teaches the process of Reiki and its healing power to people. In 1937, Japanese-American Hawayo Takata brought Reiki to the Western world. Takata then stayed in Hawaii where she was able the spread the awareness and practiced Reiki.

How Reiki Works

In a Reiki session, the patient lies down on a table. The Reiki practitioner will then put his hand on the patient’s body in different areas. It will usually start from the crown of the patient and will work its way downwards.

According to Baldwin, Reiki energy flows from the practitioner’s hand to the patient’s body. However, science again contradicts the transfer of energy. The claim wherein Reiki can heal their patients even from a distance is also opposed by science.

According to Baldwin, no one can truly explain how Reiki works. The claim is observed to be similar to an electromagnetic type of energy, and it interacts to with other person’s electromagnetic field.

Reiki, according to practitioners, encourages natural healing, lowers stress levels and promotes relaxation. But still, despite all these claims, medical experts of today do not fully accept the concept of Reiki to be the ultimate reason in healing some of the physical health issues.

What Studies Have To Say

Reiki, just like any other therapy used in healing, has undergone the double-blind controlled study. In this kind of test, the group of patients is provided fake treatment while another group is given real treatment. Fake treatments involve the use of a sugar pill while the other half of the study, participants are given the real treatments. This means that the right medication is provided with its correct dosage.

In the case of Reiki therapy, it was found out that conducting such a study is not possible. This is because the nature of Reiki therapy can easily be distinguished. The patient will identify immediately if the treatment given is fake or not. Because of this, the testing of Reiki was dismissed, and up until now, the effectiveness of the said treatment is still not clear.

The reviews of this therapy had appeared in so many research studies and published in several publications. However, in 2008, some researchers have concluded that some Reiki therapy studies have suffered from methodological discrepancies, poor data gathering and inconsistency in testing. Because of this, there is no scientific proof found to address the effectiveness of Reiki.

Reiki masters still perform Reiki therapy, but they put a disclaimer – Reiki is an energy-driven healing therapy for people in pain. It is not a solution and treatment for cancer, and other critical illnesses. Still, some Reiki masters and other medical experts stand to the idea that Reiki therapy is an effective method in reducing stress, anxiety and even depression.
